John P. Phelps

October 24, 1921 ~ December 20, 2017 (age 96) 96 Years Old

John P. “Johnny” Phelps, 96, of Tiffin, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at St. Francis Home.

He was born on October 24, 1921, in Mt. Blanchard, Ohio, to Grover C. and Edna (Eben) Phelps.  On August 17, 1946, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, he married Joanne L. Heyman and she preceded him in death on July 3, 2009.

Survivors include his son, Mike (Fabie) Phelps of Fort Worth, TX; daughters, Jane (Doug) Lauderman of Norwalk and Patti (Dan) Schmitz of Tiffin; sister, Ruth Hoepf of Tiffin; six grandchildren, Kimberly Greve and Sharon Bridges both of Fort Worth, TX, Jeff Lauderman of North Fairfield, Kasey Massatti of Pickerington, Jennifer Bates of Tiffin and Jason Schmitz of Fostoria; and 14 great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Mary Ann Phelps; brothers, Louis, Robert, Roy and infant brother, Herbert; and granddaughter, Wendy Lauderman;

Johnny was a lifelong farmer in the Tiffin and Bascom area and was a DeKalb Seed dealer for 30 years.  He was a 35-year member of Bascom Lions Club, 50-year member of Pleasant Grove Grange and a member of the Antique Machinery Association.  Johnny enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, driving around the countryside, watching nature and crops, restoring twelve International tractors over the years, collecting toy tractors and was a dog lover.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, December 29, 2017 at SS Patrick & Andrew Catholic Church, Bascom with Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating.  A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Allen Eiry Senior Center or to the Humane Society of Seneca County.
