Bernard J. “Bernie” Hohman, 76, of Tiffin, passed away on Friday afternoon, March 30, 2018 at his home.
He was born on June 18, 1941, in Tiffin, Ohio, to Paul F. and Regina L. (Brickner) Hohman. On July 4, 1968, he married Martha “Marty” Kastner.
Survivors include his wife, Marty of Tiffin; son, Bernard (Julie) Hohman, II of Lakewood, CO; daughter, Paula (Tom) Zirm of Tiffin; brothers, Dave (Clara Best) Hohman of Tiffin, Dennis (Marcia) Hohman of Fostoria, Kenneth (Rita) Hohman and Paul (Pat) Hohman, both of Tiffin; and grandchildren, Celeste Zirm, Nora Zirm and Madison Starling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Ronald Hohman.
Bernie graduated in 1959 from Hopewell Loudon High School, in 1963 from Heidelberg College and in 1969 with a Master’s Degree in Administration from Bowling Green State University. Bernie started teaching at West Junior High School in 1963, where he taught Math and Computer Science, retiring in 1995. As a teacher, he initiated grants for technology, bringing the first calculators and computers to West Jr. High. After retiring from teaching, Bernie served as the Mayor of Tiffin from January 1, 1996 to December 31, 2007 after previously serving as Fourth Ward councilman for more than eleven years and president of city council for more than ten years. His community involvement continued after retirement through Rotary, United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Tiffin Charitable Trust, Seneca County Democrats Central Committee, Tiffin City Schools Support Services Committee and Relay for Life, among others. On December 28, 2017, in recognition of his 43 years of service to the City of Tiffin, the Rebecca Street Bridge was named “The Bernard J. Hohman Bridge.”
Bernie was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where he volunteered and served as a Eucharistic Minister from 1984 to 2018. He enjoyed traveling the world, was master of the road trip, enjoyed geocaching, fishing in Canada, scroll sawing, making fundraiser items for Relay for Life and was a Ham Radio Operator under call number WA8WIA.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, April 6, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Walters officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.
