Andrew K. Althar, 92, of Bellaire and formerly of Tiffin, passed away Saturday evening January 10, 2009 at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, WV.
He was born April 4, 1916 in Bellaire, OH the son of the late G.W. and Monta (Tolmie) Althar. On May 21, 1944 he married Martha J. Weaver in St. John's United Church of Christ.
Survivors include a nephew, Richard (Monica) Althar of Bellaire; nephew, Brad (Vickie) Phillips and niece, Linda (Rusty) Ferdon all of Cicinnati; great niece, Lorrie (Dusty) Holt of Bellaire; great nephews, Ryan (Jeanie) Ferdon, Robb (Kandice) Ferdon and Jeremy Phillips all of Cincinnati; great great nieces, Calleigh Holt, Aubree, Rylee and Jamie Ferdon; great great nephews, Brody Holt and Kolvin Ferdon; niece, Jennifer Ann Weaver and great nephew, J.R. Weaver which Andrew and Martha helped raise; "adopted daughter", Susan E. Riley and "adopted family" Paul Riley, Brent, Molly, Hayden and Kale Riley all of Tiffin. Andrew is also survived and greatly missed by his many church, Tiffin Bake Shop and Devon House friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Martha of 56 years in 2000, brother, Richard Althar in 1980, a sister, Gene Phillips in 2001, 2 great nephews, Richard Althar II in 1999 and Matthew Phillips.
Mr. Althar was a 1934 Alumnus of Bellaire High School and a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII serving from 1941-1945, retiring in 1978 as Vice President of Society Bank in Fremont after 15 years. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, 62 year member of Tiffin Blue Lodge 77, Seneca Chapter 42, Clinton Council 47, Zenobia Shrine of Toledo for 42 years and Tiffin Shrine, 40 year 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Toledo.
A funeral service will be Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Proietti officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery with military honors conducted by the United Veteran's Council of Seneca County.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 16, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home. Masonic services will be at 6:00 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Johns United Church of Christ, Shriners Hospitals for Children and Burn Institutes, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
