Obituary

Betty Jean Margraf, 91, of Tiffin, passed away on Tuesday morning, October 1, 2013 at Elmwood Assisted Living at the Shawhan.

She was born on July 30, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio to John C. and Jessie (Waterman) Miller. She married Burton Margraf on August 17, 1946, at Trilby United Methodist Church near Toledo and he preceded her in death in 1999.

Survivors include her son, David (Ellen) Margraf of Canyon Lake, TX; 2 grandchildren, David (Susan) Greene of Dakota, Minnesota and Heather Greene of Houston, TX; 9 great grandchildren, Samantha, Logan, Keegan, Calvin, Isabelle, Joselyn, Rochelle, Ethan and Gabrielle; son-in-law, Neil Bradley of Tiffin; two nephews, Larry (Rebecca) Theller of Battle Ground, IN and James (Mary) Theller of Cheyenne, WY; and a niece, Susan (Ned) Moritz of Casa Grande, AZ.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; daughter, Donna Bradley on December 29, 2009; and her sister, Donna Theller in 1966.

Betty graduated from DeVilbiss High School in Toledo in 1940 and from the University of Toledo in 1944 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. While in college, Betty worked in the registrar's office on a service scholarship. World War II was on so she became a junior hostess at the USO. After graduation, she also continued USO activities in Phoenix, AZ and Long Beach, CA while holding secretarial positions. It was in Long Beach at a USO dance that she met her future husband and came to Tiffin, his hometown.

Betty was a homemaker while their children were young. Then she attended Heidelberg for teacher training and taught 4th grade at Sycamore School in the Mohawk District for 23 years; retiring in 1987. Music and boating were her hobbies and she also enjoyed reading newspapers and books and volunteering at Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

In December of 2006, Betty moved back to Tiffin to be near her family, after living in Upper Sandusky after 38 years.

She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Tiffin, the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Wyandot County Retired Teachers Association, Tiffin American Legion Auxiliary #169, University of Toledo Alumni Association, Tiffin Chapter #189 O.E.S and Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma; serving as treasurer from 1984 to 1994.

Her funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington Street, Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424 with Rev. Pam Easterday officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Friends may visit with the family from 5-8:00 P.M. on Friday, October 4, 2013 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Tiffin St. John's United Church of Christ and the American Diabetes Association.
