Charlie was born in Tiffin to Arthur S. and Belva (Hughes) Smith Jan. 25, 1934. Charlie, 76, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2010, at The Emery J. Lilge Hospice House in Burleson, Texas, after losing his fight with lung problems from years of hard work.
He married Mary Gail Borer Aug. 4, 1956, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tiffin and she survives in Fort Worth, Texas.
He is also survived by seven children, Suzanne "Suzie" Feasel and Jeanette (Marc) Coffman, both of Tiffin, Abigail (Carl) Runion, Stephen J. Smith, Robert C. (Deb) Smith, Peter A. (Tammy) Smith, and Ashley (Robert) Lamper, all of Fort Worth; the eighth "Smith Kid," David Rodgers of Tiffin; a son-in-law, Jim Feasel; 16 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Marion (Ann) Smith of Bradenton, Fla., and Tiffin; a sister, Janice (Bill) Dell of Tempe, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis (Robert) Winterhawk of Santa Rosa, Calif.; three nephews, two nieces and their families.
Charlie was a 1953 Calvert High School graduate and served his country in the U.S. Army. While in high school, Charlie had the Bel-Aire Teen Club. He was employed at Focht Brothers, National Machinery and the Tiffin Foundry. He also was the projectionist at the Tiffin Drive-In until 1965. After retiring from the Foundry and moving to Fort Worth, Charlie worked along side his son, Rob, in his construction company.
Charlie enjoyed many talents and interests in his life including, woodworking, drawing, painting and metal work. He also was an excellent baker and cook. Charlie pursued a career in commercial art at the Dayton Art Institute; however he decided to start a family with Gail in Tiffin.
A Memorial Mass will be Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 11:30 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. The Rosary will be prayed 15 minutes prior to mass.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the church from 10-11:15.
Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
