Obituary

Charlie P. Leiner, 88, of Tiffin, passed away Saturday evening March 29, 2014 at his home following a brief illness. Charlie was born on February17, 1926 in Tiffin, Ohio. He was the only son of Karl T. and Ernestine L. (Miller) Leiner.

Charlie lived in Tiffin his entire life. He was a 1944 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School and enlisted in the Army Air Corp on July 26, 1944, honorably serving his country for two years. He returned to Tiffin and graduated from Heidelberg College in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Following his graduation from college, Charlie worked side by side with his father at Leiner and Son Menswear in Tiffin for over four decades. He used to joke that he could not retire until his father did. Charlie officially retired in 1991 when the store closed after 139 years and four generations of Leiner ownership making it one of the longest running businesses in the State of Ohio.

Charlie's lifelong passion for music began in high school musicals and continued at Heidelberg where he sung in the choir. Throughout his life, Charlie also enjoyed singing in choirs around Tiffin and at Lakeside where he spent his summers as a child and after he retired. Charlie was a private pilot for over ten years and also enjoyed boating, fishing, and traveling. Charlie's friendly nature and great sense of humor earned him many friends wherever he traveled. He enjoyed taking his nieces and nephews boating on Lake Erie, especially when they were old enough to visit Put-In-Bay.

Charlie was a long-time member of Trinity United Church of Christ, the Port Clinton Yacht Club and the American Legion Post 169. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Carolyn Bage on February 23, 2014.

Survivors include his sisters, Suzanne Jackson of Defiance, OH and Jane Schulz Jones of Billings, MT; four nieces, five nephews, and two cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Church of Christ on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 11:30 a.m., followed by internment of his ashes and those of his beloved sister Carolyn in Greenlawn Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the United Veterans Council.
