Cyril H. "Bud" Elchert
Cyril H. "Bud" Elchert was called to be with God on November 20, 2011. He was born on October 3, 1925 in New Riegel to Ralph and Eulalia (Altweis) Elchert. He married Joanne M. Hoffman on April 19, 1947 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Tiffin.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne, sister Virginia Brown of Carey; sons David (Patie) Elchert of Virginia Beach, VA; Gregg (Amy) Elchert of Clyde; daughter Julie (Roger) Commager of Maumee; and grandchildren: Adele, Amanda, Alexandra, Kreston, Colin, and Kelsey. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters: Doris (Lyman) Clark, Gilbert (Betty) Elchert, Wilma (Robert) Renninger, and Rosemary (Charles) Keating.
He was a member of All Saints Parish, New Riegel and graduated from New Riegel High School in 1943. He played on the 1941 State Runner up baseball team. Bud served in the U.S. Army; 588th Corp of Combat Engineers in World War II in the European Theater. He retired in 1983 after 37 years in plant engineering from the Autolite (Honeywell) Corporation in Fostoria.
He was a master woodworker in his retirement and made thousands of pieces of furniture for family and friends. He loved to work in the "Shop Out Back" as well as to fish and travel.
He served on the New Riegel Village Council, served two terms as mayor of New Riegel, ten years as a member of the New Riegel Local Board of Education and many years of service on the All Saints Parish Council. Bud served his church in many capacities and made and donated many pieces of furniture for the sacristy including the altars.
He was loved by his family and everyone who knew him as "Uncle Bud." He had many great friends and he always had time for everyone who needed something fixed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Parish, New Riegel with Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating. Burial will follow in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery with military honors conducted by the New Riegel American Legion Post 354. A Rosary will be prayed at 10:45 AM prior to Mass.
Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 4-8 PM at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory with an American Legion Service beginning at 7:30 PM and a Christian Wake Service following. Friends may also visit on Wednesday from 9:45-10:45 at All Saints Parish, New Riegel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Parish, New Riegel or to Bridge Hospice in Findlay.
