Richard L. "Dick" Reis, 81, of East U.S. 224, Tiffin, passed away early Monday morning, June 24, 2013 at his home following a brief illness.
Dick was born in Seneca County on November 4, 1931 to Bert and Maude Reis. On April 19, 1954, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin he married Donna L. Ink and she survives in rural Tiffin.
Also surviving are one son and two daughters, Christy (Whitey) Florence of Bloomville, Eric Reis and Cheryl (Chris King) Hammer of rural Tiffin; eight grandchildren, Nicole (Ben) Collar, First Lieutenant Jason Florence, USMC, Megan Florence, Brittani (Jason) McClaflin, Clint Reis, Danielle Reis, J.T. Hammer and Erika (Luke) Leppla; and five great grandchildren, Jackson and Lucy Collar, Brock Reis Brause, Ryker McClaflin and Della Mae Leppla. He is also survived by two brothers, John (Loretta) Reis and Robert (Phyllis) Reis and sister-in-law, Wanda Reis of Tiffin; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death was one brother, James and four sisters, Hazel (Kenneth) Smith, Martha (Charles) Reagan, Mary Jane (Donald) Miller and Anna Mae "Boots" (Richard) McCarthy.
Dick graduated from Eden Local School in Melmore, Ohio in 1950. After graduation he farmed and then in 1954, he volunteered into the United States Army and served in Korea at the end of the Korean War. Upon discharge from the army, he worked at the Tiffin General Electric for a while and then he went to work for Charles M. Ink in the construction business building bridges. When Mr. Ink retired, Dick formed a construction business R & I Construction, Inc. which is still in business today, run by his son, Eric and has built bridges all over Ohio and continued with farming. Mr. Reis retired, but continued to help with the construction business which is now a four generation operation. His favorite passion was bridges and he was a member of the Ohio Laborers Union.
Mr. Reis had many interests. He loved to hunt squirrel, deer and frogs. He loved all sports especially The Ohio State University sports, Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Cavaliers. He enjoyed all of his grandchildren, especially their showing pigs at the Seneca County Fair and attending their high school sporting events. He loved to drive around and see what the farmers were accomplishing. He also enjoyed watching his young great grandchildren progress.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 28, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the United Veterans Council. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to the Mass.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be from 3-7:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington Street, Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 7:00 P.M.
