Obituary

Don Alvin Miller, 83, of Old Fort, passed away suddenly at ProMedica Hospital in Fremont, Ohio on June 1, 2026.  He was affectionately known by family and friends as “Smokey” and “Millie.”

Don was born on January 20, 1943, in Tiffin, Ohio, to Ernest and Maxine (Albright) Miller. He was first married to Diane Mowery and later divorced. On August 31, 1968 he married Donna Curns, who survives him in Old Fort.

He is also survived by his children, Dennis (Kelli) Miller of Tiffin, Kelly (Bill) Hitchcock of Perrysburg, and Jeff (Brandy) Miller of Tiffin; his grandchildren, Cody Miller, Michaela Miller, Morgan Miller, Ashley Hitchcock, Blake Hitchcock, Audra Miller, Marah Miller, and Owen Miller; his sister, Peg Miller of Tiffin; and his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Jeannine Curns, Ken (Sherry) Curns, Bonnie (Rick) Sanford, Cindy (Nick) Heilman, all of Tiffin, and Brenda (Joe) Hiestand of Fremont. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest & Maxine Miller, father & mother-in-law, Alvin & MaryLou Curns; his brothers, Eugene Miller and Ed and Kay Miller; his brother-in-law, Dick Curns; and his sister-in-law, Jeannette Beidelchies.

He attended Melmore and Republic Schools and graduated from Old Fort High School in 1961. Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1973, including service in Vietnam.

Throughout his life, Don held many roles. He was a farmer, he worked as a milkman and later served as Chief of Security at the State Hospital in Tiffin, where he dedicated 25 years before retiring. He also helped Ken Haack and Denny Yoakum with farming. In retirement, he enjoyed working as a greenskeeper at Nature Trails and Clinton Heights Golf Courses.

Don found great joy in supporting his grandchildren at all their sporting events, playing cards, and spending time at the Old Fort Ex-Hi building. He loved watching dirt track racing, camping at the lake, tending his garden, and being with his extended family & friends. He was well known for his quick wit and funny one-liners, as well as his private popcorn recipe, peanut brittle, ham and bean soup, and homemade ice cream. A true handyman, Don could fix just about anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone.

In accordance with Don’s wishes, there will be no visitation or formal service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
