Donald D. Derr, 80, of Tiffin, passed away Tuesday morning, February 15, 2011 at his home.
On December 1, 1930 in Carey, OH, he was born to Herman and Grace (Windau) Derr. He married Mary Ellen Hoerig June 9, 1956 in St. Mary Catholic Church.
Survivors include his children, Donna (Roger) Miller of Beloit, OH; Darlene (Kenneth) Bloom, Deborah (Terry) England, Dianna Wise, Denise (Larry) Cox all of Tiffin; Danna (David) Myerholtz of Gibsonburg; Dawnitta (Bryan) Schalk and Duane Derr both of Tiffin; brothers, Floyd (Joyce) Derr and Gaylord (LaVera) Derr both of Carey; sisters in law, Mary Lou Derr of Wharton , Louise Derr of Carey; 21 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and a special friend, Barbara Myers of Findlay.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 49 years on January 13, 2006, Mary Ellen, brothers, Ralph, Joe, and Vincent Derr, sisters, Lucille Cooley and Martha Saunders.
Don was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the cemetery board, graduated from Carey High School and served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953-1956.
He volunteered as an usher, worked bingo, and the festival. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, New Riegel Post 354, United Commercial Travelers, Calvert Athletic Boosters, 4-H advisor for over 50 years, advisor for Circle E Beef 4-H Club for 50 years, Cattleman's Association, Seneca County Farm Bureau and Seneca County Soil and Water. He was former President and very active in the Seneca County Jr. Fair Foundation for over 40 years and honored in the 4-H Hall of Fame and the Seneca County Agricultural Hall of Fame. He enjoyed farming for the Sisters of St. Francis for over 50 years. "He puts it in the ground and the good Lord takes care of it".
Don loved his family, dedicating his life to his wife, children and grandchildren. He made a lot of friends and always had time to listen, and give advice when needed.
A Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to the mass. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 354, New Riegel.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, February 18, 2011 from 2-8 pm at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory. A wake service will follow at 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Calvert Catholic Schools, Community Hospice Care, or the Seneca County Junior Fair Foundation.
