Donald (Don) S. Schafer, 81, of rural Bloomville, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. He was born on November 15, 1944, in Bucyrus, to the late Sylvanus and Arlena (Seibert) Schafer. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his infant brother, James Schafer.
He married the love of his life, Yvonne R. (Brickner/Hossler) Schafer on July 27,1985 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Chatfield, and she survives. Other survivors are stepchildren, Kenneth (Jill) Hossler and Kevin (Nichole) Hossler. Also surviving are his four adored grandsons, Jacob (Heather) Hossler, Tyler Hossler, Kennedy (Ashley) Hossler, and Kasey (fiancé Jill Fox) Hossler. In addition, he has a close friend, Kolin Rowlinson. Don has a brother-in-law, Dwight (Debra) Brickner, and two sisters-in-law, Phyllis (James) Hossler and Lynn (John) Dewald, all of Fostoria, and brother-in-law, Tom (Linda) Diller, of Indiana. A sister-in-law, Shirley Diller, is deceased. Don also has several nieces and nephews.
Don was a 1963 graduate of Attica High School. He proudly served for 6 years in the Army National Guard. He was a lifelong farmer and worked at GE in Tiffin, Tiffin Enterprise, Venice Township maintenance, and Seneca East School bus driver.
Don enjoyed attending antique tractor shows, horses, going to Amish country, sitting out on his barn porch, eating at MST Pub, spending time with family and friends, cookout parties at his woods, and loved eating popcorn made with lard, and cutting firewood. He was notorious for telling stories and pulling pranks. Don easily made friends with anyone. He knew no stranger.
At Don’s request, a private funeral service for family members will be held, Burial will be in Nazareth Lutheran Church Cemetery in Chatfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to Nazareth Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
