Obituary

Donald L. “Don” Wingart, 89, of Bascom, passed away on Wednesday, September 09, 2026, at the Willows at Tiffin.

He was born on April 09, 1937, in Bascom, Ohio, to Elwood and Lula (Glick) Wingart. On September 13, 1958, he married Sara Kelbley.

Survivors include his wife, Sara Wingart of Bascom; Scott Wingart of Tiffin and Brett (Kim) Wingart of Powell; brother, Ray (Ramona) Wingart of Visalia, CA; sisters, Karen Strausser of Port Clinton and Peg Bakies of Middlesboro, KY; and grandchildren, Noah Wingart and Zora Wingart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Julie; and sister, Janet Merritt.

Don graduated in 1955 from Hopewell-Loudon High School and was an outstanding baseball player. In 1957 he graduated from Tiffin University with an accounting degree. After graduating from Tiffin University, he served in the United States Army, serving in Ft. Knox, KY from 1960 to 1962. His first job was with the Gem Mfg. Company in Bascom. He then went on to work at Tiffin Art Metal and retired from Atlas Crankshaft. After retiring, he worked at Coldwell Banker Geyer Associates and Paul Cole Motors.

In the summer, you could always find Don on a golf course, and he especially loved golfing with his son, grandson, and nephew David Hoover. Don enjoyed camping with family and friends especially at Swander Quarry, playing cards, bowling and shooting the breeze. Over the years, Don did a lot of the remodeling of their home in Bascom. Early on, he was a volunteer firefighter and secretary, then treasurer with the Bascom Fire Department, and was a member of Bascom Lions Club, New Riegel American Legion, New Riegel Moose Lodge and the Fostoria Elks. Most of all, Don loved spending time with his family. He was a kind soul.

Friends may visit with the family from 1-4:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory. A private burial took place at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Bascom with Military Honors being conducted by the New Riegel American Legion.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Riegel American Legion, Meadowbrook Park, and Bascom Fire District Foundation.
