Dorothy Dean Heck, 93, passed away on Wednesday February 15, 2017 at Elmwood Assisted Living at The Shawhan – Tiffin.
She was born on October 7, 1923, in Ruffs Dale PA to Eli Burl and Maud (Smith) Weaver. She met Carl W. Heck as a student at Heidelberg College and they were married on June 12, 1948 in St Joseph Church. They had five children.
Dorothy is survived by her five children: William (Mary) Heck of Columbus, Donna Fischer of Greensburg PA, Tom (Vickie) Heck of Tiffin, Barbara Heck of Columbus and Jane (Jim) Broadbent of Cortland; 8 grandchildren, Allyson, Andrea, Alicia, Janet, Deena, Lauren, James and Carl; and 8 great-grandchildren, Evan, Taryn, Ethan, Madison, Audrey, Leah, Avery and Charlotte.
Predeceasing her in death were her parents; husband, Carl; and her son-in-law, Donald Fischer.
Dorothy graduated in 1940 from East Huntington High School, then moved to Washington DC to work in the War Department. At the end of WWII, she attended Heidelberg, married and raised her five children. When the children were all in school, she began working in the St. Joseph School library, and was employed there for 40 years. She sang in the St. Joseph Church choir and played guitar for the first parish Guitar Masses. Dorothy helped form the Josephines, an organization that prepared craft items for sale to raise funds for needy school students. After she retired, she and Carl traveled extensively to visit family and enjoy different sites around the world. She loved to read, play piano, sing in the choir and do her craft work.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, February 20, 2017 at St Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow in St Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
She asked to be cremated at her death. A memorial gathering will be held from 3-5:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Joseph Catholic Church, the Calvert Catholic Elementary School Library, or the Friends of the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library.
