Obituary

Evelyn I. Sertell, 102, of Tiffin, passed away Sunday afternoon, October 16, 2016 at St. Francis Home.

She was born on February 14, 1914, in Moorefield, Ohio to George Hubert and Gertrude (Compher) Wood. On June 19, 1939, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin, she married Paul J. Sertell and he preceded her in death on September 15, 1969.

Survivors include her daughter, Sara Jane (Wayne) Wax of Tiffin; three grandchildren, Valerie Wax (Adam) Carr, Victoria Marie (Todd) Harris and Vanessa Lynn (Jeff) Cook; eight great grandchildren; Seth William Carr, Gavin Paul Carr, Corinne Marie Harris, Taylor Renea Harris, Jackson Charles Cook, Isaac William Cook, Garrett James Cook and Bryce Daniel Cook; nephew, Dale (Kathleen) Longsworth of South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews on the Sertell side.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Pearl Anderson Wood; identical twin sister, Ethelyn Longsworth; and great grandson, Colin James Carr.

Evelyn graduated from Freeport High School in 1932 where she and her twin sister, Ethelyn were star basketball players and from Lillian Johnson's Beauty School in Columbus in 1933. She was a beautician for 40 years; working at the Vanity Fair Beauty Shop in the Shawhan Building in 1935 and then opened her own business, Evelyn's Beauty Shoppe in downtown Tiffin. Evelyn also lived in Toledo for 4 years and taught at the Toledo Academy of Beauty Culture. In the early 1950's, she was co-owner of Sertell's Sundries (which was San-Mar Pharmacy), along with her husband and also worked at the Seneca County Treasurer's office retiring after 10 years in 1980. Evelyn was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin Emblem Club #62, an original member of the Cotillion Club and an active member of the Tiffin Elks Lodge #94. She was a hockey fan and on her 100th birthday she enjoyed a ride on the Zamboni at the Toledo Walleye game. Evelyn was a devoted sports fan to major league sports, college sports and Calvert High School. She enjoyed going on Allen Eiry trips, traveling around the world, family events and her favorite times were the ones she spent with her daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family from 2-8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 1:30 P.M.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of Mrs. Sertell's request, memorial contributions may be made to the Colin James Carr Fund at Akron Children's Hospital, One Perkins Square, Akron, Ohio 44308-1062 or to Calvert Catholic Schools.
