Frederick E. "Fred" Swartz, 92, of Tiffin, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, November 11, 2016 at his home surrounded by family.
He was born on October 16, 1924, in Tiffin, Ohio, to Jesse and Edna (Karcher) Swartz. On April 12, 1947, he married Madeline Marie Reinhart.
Survivors include his wife, Madeline of Tiffin; two sons, David (Patty Smith) Swartz and Don (Deb) Swartz, both of Tiffin; two daughters, Barb (Jimmie) Young of Sycamore and Jane Bower of Tiffin; two brothers, Robert Turner of CA and Dennis (Amy) Turner of Tiffin; sister, Shirley (Verlin) Thacker of Tiffin; 12 grandchildren, Jim Steinmetz, Laurie Morter, Jeffrey Swartz, Julie Dean, Kathryn Swartz, Karen Swartz-Dowling, Kristy Risner, Sharon Pheifer, Jonathon Risner, Daniel Bower, Joseph Swartz and Christa Stacklin; and 23 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward and Richard Swartz; two sisters, Betty Swartz and Laura Swartz; great grandchild, Cathryn Risner; and great, great grandchild, Brooklyn Taylor.
Fred served in the United States Navy as a Torpedoman Mate Third Class from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. He was a press operator and welder at General Electric, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Tiffin Lion's Club, St. Mary Catholic Church and their funeral luncheon committee and the men's choir. He enjoyed traveling, yard work, playing in card clubs with friends, helping his family and he loved spending time with his grandchildren, especially attending their sporting events and school activities. Recently, Fred was honored as a "Plank Owner" or first seaman on the ship, on the historical monument, U.S.S. Cassin Young docked in Boston Harbor.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, November 14, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Walters officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the United Veterans Council.
Friends may visit with the family from 4-7:00 P.M. on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or to Bridge Hospice.
