George T. Kastner, 92, of Tiffin, went to join the love of his life peacefully with his children by his side on Monday, March 31, 2014 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.
He was born on November 1, 1921, in Tiffin, Ohio, to Joseph and Margaret (Zapf) Kastner. On December 1, 1945, he married Odelia "Dee" Frances Weatherholt and she preceded him in death on September 23, 2008.
Survivors include his son, Tom (Margaret) (Hoffman) Kastner of Tiffin and his daughter, Norma Gladieux of Tiffin; 2 grandchildren, Jacquelyn (Kyle) (Gladieux) Timmons of Oak Harbor and Eric Kastner of Tiffin; 3 great grandchildren, Nicholas, Rebecca and Anna Timmons; and 2 sisters-in-law, Marilyn Kastner and Mary Weatherholt.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Paul, William and Raymond Kastner; and sister, Mary Jo Gase.
George graduated in 1939 from Tiffin Calvert High School and then was in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II from September 1, 1942 to November 12, 1945 where he earned the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. George also served at England's Burtonwood Airforce Base with his brother Paul. He was a machinist at Webster Mfg. for over 47 years; retiring in 1986 and was a member of the American Legion Post #169. He enjoyed traveling the United States, collecting Tiffin Glass, going to garage sales with his wife, hunting, fishing, bowling and enjoyed all types of sports especially the Detroit Tigers or any Detroit sport. He also loved animals, especially his dog, Yoshi and enjoyed catching fish with his brother Ray and supporting the local fish fry's. George loved his time with his family; watching his grandchildren play sports and attending family reunions and he made friends with everyone.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Walters officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the United Veterans Council. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass.
Friends may visit with family from 6-8:00 P.M. on Friday, April 4, 2014 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 5:30 P.M.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church.
