Gertrude A. Smith, 86, of Tiffin, passed away Thursday evening, December 25, 2014 at St. Francis Home.
She was born on March 4, 1928, in Ottawa to Alexander P. and Gertrude H. (Siefker) Gerten. She married Herman G. Smith on April 10, 1948, at St. Boniface Church I New Riegel and he preceded her in death on April 6, 2000.
She is survived by 5 sons, William V. (Jane) and Donald F. (Nancy) both of Tiffin, Jim A. (Deb) of Tupelo, Miss., Raymond L. (Alina) of Ft. Pierce, FL, Norman P. ( Mary) of Plano, TX; 4 daughters, Barbara A. Smith of Cincinnati, Patricia M. (Walter) O'Dell of Hilliard, Nancy (John) Wallace of Logan, Liona (Charles) Maluzzi of Arlington, VA; 18 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and sister, Mary Ellen (Donald) Wilhelm.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Rudolph and Carl Gerten; 2 sisters, Maeola Gerten Evert and Elizabeth "Betty" Gerten Tusing; and granddaughter, Rebecca Leigh Smith in 1990.
Gertrude was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and volunteered in the school cafeteria for years. A 1946 graduate of New Riegel High School, she worked on the family farm with her husband, raised her nine children, 4-H leader, and was a member of the Seneca County Farm Bureau. Gertrude enjoyed bowling in the Ladies League at the Knights of Columbus, crocheting, embroidery, gardening and loved growing beautiful flowers.
Her Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family from 2-4:00 P.M. and 6-8:00 P.M. on December 30, 2014 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-2424. A Christian Wake service will begin at 7:45 P.M.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Home or Calvert Catholic Schools Tuition Fund.
