Harold C. "Eck" Eckelberry, 93, of Tiffin, passed away on Tuesday morning, October 27, 2015 at Volunteers of America Autumnwood Care Center.
He was born on October 5, 1922, in Otsego, Ohio to James and Ada (Corbett) Eckelberry and was one of eight sons. On December 18, 1953 in Sandusky County, he married Janet D. Howey.
Survivors include his wife, Janet of Tiffin; two sons, James (Pat) Eckelberry of Tiffin and William (Jean) Eckelberry of Republic; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Ruth Adkins in 2002; seven brothers, Russel, Earl, Wilmer, Arthur, John, Neil and
Leslie.
Harold graduated in 1942 from Otsego High School. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and after basic training was assigned to the 8th Air Force, 445th Bomb Group, 703 Bomb Squadron and served from August 4, 1942 to September 18, 1945. Harold flew 30 missions in a B-24 over Germany in World War II. He was the Flight Engineer and the Commanding Officer was Capt. James M. Stewart (the movie star). Mr. Stewart flew several missions with Harold's crew. Harold was a T.S.G.T when discharged. After returning from the War, he was the Service Manager for the Ford Dealership in Fremont. In August of 1963, Harold and his wife moved to Tiffin, Ohio where he was the Service Manager at Porter Motors until he purchased Eck's Auto Service in 1979, on West Market Street, where he was owner and operator until he retired in March 1989. Harold was a member of First Lutheran Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
His Memorial Service will be at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424 with Pastor Roger Giese officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the United Veterans Council.
Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Service on Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the V.F.W. Tiffin Post #2858, First Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
