Howard "Duke" Young, 90, of Tiffin, passed away on June 28, 2014 at St. Francis Home, Tiffin.
He was born on July 19, 1923, in Fostoria, Ohio, to Howard M. and Elsie J. (Spurgeon) Young. On June 15, 1943, he married Mary Ellen Lenz.
Survivors include his companion, Bonnie Cook; two sons, Gregory W. Young of Tiffin and David Allan (Melissa) Young of Hillsboro, TX; three daughters, Linda Lou Hohman and Mary Louise Peacock, both of Tiffin and Barbara A. (Dan) Justen of Stow, Ohio; one sister, Geneva (George) Boggs of Magadore, OH; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 4 great, great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 50 years, Mary Ellen; son, Howard Young, Jr. in 2009; two sons-in-law, Buzz Hohman and Tom Peacock; brother, Charles Young; three sisters, Frances Annon, Laura E. Lawhun and Rosella Thompson; and grandson, Jason Justen.
Duke enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 serving during World War II and was honorably discharged on December 14, 1945. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, was the former owner of the Corner Market at the corner of Sycamore St. and Washington St. and was owner and operator of H Young Painting and Contracting. He ran for Mayor of Tiffin, was the past director for Beautification of Tiffin, past Seneca County Fair board member and past president of the Seneca County Health Board for 15 years. Duke was a life member of the V.F.W. Tiffin Post #2858 and was a member of the AmVets Post #48, Moose Lodge #846, Masonic Tiffin Lodge #77, Zenobia Shrine, Seneca Chapter #42, Clinton Council #47, DeMolay Commandery #9 and the Tiffin Lions Club for 17 years.
His funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424 with Rev. Ken Gillikin officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the United Veterans Council.
Visitation will be from 4-8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the funeral home and from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service on Wednesday.
