Chief Petty Officer, James R. "Jim" Hurley, 82, of Melmore, goes on his eternal patrol Saturday morning, April 7, 2012 at his home.
On September 4, 1929 in Portsmouth, OH; he was born to Harley and Ruby (Marasack) Hurley. He married Blanche E. Morter on June 26, 1954.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche of 57 years; sons, Scott (Ruth Owens) Hurley and David (Nancy) Hurley both of Tiffin; James (Kimberly) Hurley of Upper Sandusky; daughters, Anita (Kirby) Sniffen of Manassas, VA; Patti (Steve) Speck of Bowling Green, OH; 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and a brother, David Hurley of Washington Court House, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Virginia Yeley and Charlotte Miller.
Jim was a member of Melmore United Methodist Church, graduate of McClain High School in Greenfield, OH. He served his country in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, enlisting on September 25, 1946 and honorably discharged in San Diego, CA on June 8, 1966. While in the Navy, he spent most of his time aboard many submarines and received multiple medals for his service. After his discharge, he worked as an electrician in the shipyards. He moved to Melmore in 1969 and owned and operated Hurley's Market in Melmore for many years and worked at Worthington plastics in Upper Sandusky until his retirement in 1991. He was a life member of Submarine Veterans of WWII and Buckeye Boaters. Jim enjoyed Square Dancing with his wife in the T-Squares for many years and being apart of the Master's Gardeners Club.
His funeral service will be Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory at 10:00 AM with Rev. Dr. Jan Kucera officiating. Burial will follow in Rock Creek Cemetery with military honors conducted by the United Veterans Council.
Friends may visit on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 from 4-8 PM at the funeral home.
