Jeanne Elizabeth (Rowan) Bernard, age 86, entered Heaven to meet her dear husband Paul on June 28, 2008. She was a former resident of Tiffin, Ohio, who recently resided in Columbus to be near her devoted and loving daughter, Paula, and family.
Jeanne was born on May 9, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio to Irish immigrants Michael & Mary Ellen (Bruen) Rowan. She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Sr. Jeanne Marie Rowan O.S.U. and Brother John Rowan. Jeanne was married to Paul R. Bernard in St. Agnes Church, October 21, 1950 and moved to Tiffin to raise their family.
Jeanne was educated in Toledo, Ohio at St. Agnes, St. Ursula Academy (1940), and St. Vincent's School of Nursing (1944). She did Post Graduate Nursing at Margaret Hague O. B. Hospital, Jersey City, NJ.
She was an O.B. Supervisor at St. Vincent's Hospital, Toledo from 1945-1950 and Dr. Schaefer's office. After moving to Tiffin, she was an office nurse with Dr. John Leahy and worked at Tiffin Mercy Hospital O.B. Department 1967-1969. She was the first lay RN to serve as Nurse Supervisor at St. Francis Home, from 1969-1989, where her father was one of the first residents.
Jeanne loved to care for others, and this was demonstrated by her decision to organize Tiffin Mobile Meals, through Mercy Hospital in 1971. She coordinated the volunteers from 1971-2002.
Jeanne was a member of St. Vincent & St. Ursula's Alumni Association, Professional Registered Nurses Club, and former Diocesan President National Council of Catholic Nurses. She was a member of St. Francis Home Auxiliary, Seneca County Home Auxiliary, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, St. Joseph Rosary Alter Society, Friends of the Library, Volunteer for Betty Jane, Friends of Allen Eiry Seniors, Lady's Choir at St. Joseph, Cotillion Club and Nifty-Fifty Bowling Club. Jeanne was a member of the Tiffin YMCA since 1978.
Jeanne was the loving Mother of Jim ( Andrea) of Cleveland Ohio, Tom(Penny) of Sun Prairie, WI, Paula ( Kenneth)Cohen, Columbus, Ohio and Tim ( Mary) Pittsburgh, PA. She was a devoted Grandmother to Nicholas, Jama, Drew, Maggie, Morrisa, Kevin, Zoe, and Lexi. Other surviving relatives are Jean Bernard of Port Clinton, Mary Ann Buckley, Pat McNulty of Toledo and Betty Kilkelly of Flushing NY.
A Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tiffin with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. A Rosary will be prayed at the church on Wednesday at 9:45 AM.
Friends may celebrate her life Tuesday, July 1, 2008 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home, 236 S. Washington St. 419-447-2424.
