Obituary

Joan Rose Smith, age 93, died on November 7, 2024, at St. Francis Home, Tiffin, Ohio. She was the daughter of Charles H. & Alvina M. (Riecke) Schenher.

Joan graduated from Huntertown High School in 1949. On September 15, 1951, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Ege, Indiana, she married her high school sweetheart, Donald J. Smith. Don passed away on May 21, 1999.

Joan had a beautiful singing voice, and as a young adult, performed at various local venues. She also made several vinyl recordings, which her family will treasure forever.  Joan spent many years working in the banking and insurance industry in customer service in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to their lake home outside of Coldwater, Michigan, and spent their winters as "snowbirds" in Sebring, Florida. Throughout her life, Joan enjoyed shopping, and playing cards, but most of all she liked spending time with her husband, family, and her life-long friends & classmates, Phil and Charlene Dickes, and George and Betty Dunten.

Survivors include daughter, Susan (Michael) Michaels of Burgoon, Ohio; son Greg (Kathy) Smith of Trussville, Alabama; and daughter Julie Cadarette of Tiffin, Ohio; four grandchildren, Bradford (Bridget) Michaels, Timothy (Katie) Michaels, Kathryn (Michael) Estep and Amelia Michaels; and eight great-grandchildren, Gregory, Elaina, Jonathan, Joshua, & Brianna Michaels and Judah, Micah, and Saralynn Estep.

Joan's parents and husband, Don preceded her in death.

A private, family service will be held at a later date. Internment will be at the Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Michigan.

The family wishes to thank the kind and caring staff of St. Francis Home and Stein Hospice for providing Joan with impeccable care.
