John Francis De Ran, IV passed away at the University of Michigan Health Trauma Burn Center in Ann Arbor, MI, on August 15th, 2026, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

John was born on July 3rd, 1961 to the late Jack and Patty De Ran. As an Air Force brat, he attended multiple schools throughout the world, making friends wherever he went. John’s family eventually settled in Old Fort, Ohio, where he attended Old Fort High School and began working on the family farm. In high school, he met the love of his life, Cindy Ahle. They dated for two years, separating during college until life brought them back together.

John graduated from Old Fort High School in 1979 and then attended The Ohio State University in Columbus, solidifying his lifelong love of the Buckeyes. While at OSU, he was an active member of Delta Theta Sigma agricultural fraternity. He graduated from OSU In 1984, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.

After reconnecting with Cindy, they were married on February 8th, 2002, with their families and children in attendance. Together, they have five children and one grandchild, Gianna, with another on the way. His beloved children are Kristen (Dylan), Katie (Brad), Sara (Jake), Eric, and Jack.

John lived a life devoted to his family and his farm. He and his father grew soybeans and corn together. Later in life, he enjoyed slowing down with five greenhouses where he grew organic vegetables. He is the older brother of Jennifer (Kevin), uncle to John (Ashli), Jason (Liz), and a great-uncle to Nellie, Jack and Vincent.

His greatest joy came from his children. He was always letting them know how proud he was of them, and loved nothing more than intimidating and teasing his daughters' partners. His sense of humor was unmatched. John was generous to a fault, giving you the shirt off his back while griping that you didn’t take his shorts as well. You couldn’t visit the farm without walking away with more produce than you could eat, with the promise of more to come next time you visit.

John loved to spend time with his family and friends. From exploring Hawaii in a Jeep with Cindy to enjoying a sunset on the boat at Riverfront Marina with his kids, he appreciated every shared moment with his loved ones. Sitting, talking, and sharing a Natty Light with friends was all John needed to have a great evening. He was larger than life, an unstoppable force, a wonderful husband and father. He was complicated and kind, and will be missed by his family, many friends, and acquaintances.

There will not be any services at this time. Burial will be in Pleasant Union Cemetery in Old Fort.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sandusky County Dog Kennel, Old Fort Local School District FFA or to Hopewell-Loudon Volleyball.
