John L. Dunn, senior vice-president of National Machinery Company
John L. Dunn, 85 Pinecrest Drive, a lifelong resident of Tiffin, Ohio died Tuesday morning, June 30, 2015 at his home. He was born November 1, 1918. His parents were John E. and Ethel (Culhane) Dunn, both deceased. He married Elizabeth Chronerberry October 14, 1941. His wife and two brothers, Msgr. Edward Dunn and Rev. Richard Dunn, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his son, John and wife Leslie of Shaker Heights, Ohio; son, Dr. Michael and wife, Mary of Libertyville, Illinois; four grandchildren: Mary Beth, Sean, Murphy, Andrew, and one great-grandson, Jason.
Mr. Dunn retired from the National Machinery Company in 1985 after 45 years of service. At the time of his retirement, he was senior vice-president. He was vice-president of sales for many years and was instrumental in forming a worldwide sales organization for the company. He was also responsible for implementing sales to the then Communist block countries and the People's Republic of China. He first visited Russia in the midst of the Cold War, where he negotiated a contract to provide National machinery to produce the Lada automobile in Russia under license from Fiat of Italy. He first visited China in 1974 and was instrumental in the sale of machinery to produce automotive and bicycle components.
Mr. Dunn was an ardent believer in free trade. He was a member of the US-USSR and the US-Republic of China Trade Counsels. He also held memberships in the American Society of Metals, the Machine Tool Builders, and the Association of Ohio Commodores. He served on the boards of Mercy Hospital, Tiffin-Seneca Library and Saint Francis Health Care Center of Green Springs.
He was a 1940 graduate of Saint Joseph College in Rensselaer, Indiana where he served on the board for many years. In 1990, he established a scholarship for deserving students from northwest Ohio to attend Saint Joseph College. In 1992, the College granted him an honorary Doctor of Law degree.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 3, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. at Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery with Rev. Gary Walters officiating.
His family is grateful to the dedicated, loving, and tireless efforts of his TLC caregivers, who allowed him to remain in his home during the final years of his life.
Memorials may be made to Calvert Catholic Schools or to the charity of the donor's choice.
