John Leo Eichhorn, 90, of Tiffin, joined the angels on June 27, 2020 at Mercy Health-Tiffin Hospital.

He was born July 7, 1929, in Tiffin, Ohio, to William and Frances (Warnement) Eichhorn. He married Mary I. Stefanelli, on October 16, 1954 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Tiffin. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage together and she survives him.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Thomas) Ferkovic of Highland Hts, OH.; son, Thomas (Teri) Eichhorn of Beavercreek, OH.; six grandchildren, Dr. Carol (Eric) Mack, Michael (Julie) Ferkovic both of University Hts., OH., Crista Eichhorn, Tyler Eichhorn both of Beavercreek, OH., Rachel Wurm of Louisville, KY.; Andrea Wurm of Cleveland and two step grandchildren.  Also surviving are his two brother-in-laws, Joseph (Janet) Stefanelli of Pemberville, OH., and Eugene (Carol) Stefanelli of Henderson, NV.

Precededing him in death were his parents; a daughter, Carol Marie Wurm; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill (Nancy) Eichhorn; brother-in-law, Nazaro Stefanelli; and sister-in-law, Assunta (Susie) Kurtz.

John graduate of Calvert High School, class 1947. He was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and became a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, after moving to the west side of Tiffin.

His initial job in high school was working at Mercy Hospital where his dad was employed in maintenance and driving for the nuns. After working for Nelson Tree Service a short time, he became employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was drafted into the Army serving for 2 years during the Korean Conflict stationed most of his time in Alaska before it was a state. After service, he returned to his job with the railroad. The Pennsylvania Railroad merged and became the Penn Central Railroad and after another merger became Conrail. He worked as a signalman in the communication and signal department as a signal inspector for 42 years until his retirement in 1991.

He was an enthusiast of the Railroad, always commenting "when as a child, they were too poor for him to have a train set, so he went to work to run the big ones." He was a Mr. Fix-it and noted for his GARAGE. He loved traveling with his wife, especially on trains and finding new and different things to do. They wintered many years with friends in Fort Myers Beach, FL. John was member of the Knights of Columbus Council 608, and the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, the Elks, Serra Club of Tiffin, American Legion, St. Francis Home Auxiliary, Allen Eiry Senior Center and was a former councilman of St. Mary and volunteered with other organizations including those of St, Mary Church. He loved being around with his family and especially doting on his grandchildren, and avid reader, especially of trivia. He developed into a good conversationalist with anybody he might meet.

When he was not reading he was busy with his hands, making, fixing, planting, or planning, something. He helped on many committees Mary worked on. They were known to do everything together.

His Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at 10:00 AM at St Mary Church with Rev. Matthew Rader officiating. The Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass and Burial will follow at St Mary Catholic Cemetery with military honors by the United Veterans Council.
