John D. "Jack" Gregory, 78, of Tiffin, passed away Tuesday morning, January 22, 2013 at Volunteers of America Autumnwood Care Center.
He was born on August 11, 1934, in Fostoria, Ohio to Lajoie and Laveda (Apple) Gregory. On March 21, 1953, he married Deloris Ann Garrison.
Survivors include his wife, Deloris; son, Scott (Rachel) Gregory of Alvada; daughter, Laura (Kevin) O'Millian of Tiffin; 5 grandchildren, Grace, Sara and Evan Gregory, Emalee Bartchlett, and Jonathan O'Millian.
Preceding him in death were his parents; step-mother, Dorothy Gregory; and sister, Janet Wyandt.
Jack was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and graduated in 1952 from Fostoria High School and then served in the United States Marine Corp from August 19, 1952 to August 18, 1955. While serving in the military, he was director of the "B" Band at the Marine Air Wing Station. After the military he graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1959 with a Bachelor's degree and attended the University of Michigan for his Masters. He was the manager of the Bureau of Unemployment Services in Tiffin from 1965-1969 and was the music teacher and band director at Whiteford Agriculture School in Ottowa Lake, MI from 1959-1962, at Carey from 1962-1965 and at Old Fort School from 1969 until retiring in 1982. He also worked part-time as the high brass instructor at Heidelberg for a few years. Jack was a member of the V.F.W. Post #2858, American Legion Post #169, McClellan Marine League in Findlay, Tiffin Shrine Club, Seneca County Scottish Rite, Samaria Masonic Lodge #438 and the Ohio Motor Pool Association. He played in the V.F.W. band in Fostoria for many years and also played in many area dance bands; forming his own "Jack Gregory Orchestra Band. Jack was collector of all things.
His funeral service will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424, with Rev. Donna Van Trees officiating. The United Veterans Council will conduct military honors at 12:30 P.M.. Burial will be private in Knollcrest Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family from 5-8:00 P.M. on Friday, January 25, 2013 and from 11-12:00 noon on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the funeral home. The Masonic Lodge #77 will conduct services at 6:30 P.M.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Seneca County, F.A.C.T. or the McClellan Marine League.
