Obituary

John M. Shatzer, 94, of Sandusky and formerly of Tiffin, passed away on Tuesday, October 08, 2024 at the Ohio Veterans Home.

He was born on January 13, 1930, in Tiffin, Ohio, to Maurice E. and Genevieve L. (VanMeter) Shatzer.  He first married Shirley Flagg and they later divorced.  He later married Patricia Carrick and they  divorced.

Survivors include his son, Terry L. (Cathy) Shatzer of Charleston, SC; daughters, Robin (Tom) Darr of Fremont, Kimberly (Jim) Moyer of Fremont, Gena (Buddy) Brickner of Tiffin and Cynthia (Bill) Mahaken of Littleton, CO; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; first wife, Shirley Robbins; and second wife, Patricia Carrick.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Gene Shatzer.

John was a 1949 graduate of Fostoria High School.  After high school he served in the United States Army with the First Calvary Division during the Korean Conflict.  He worked at Montgomery Ward in Fremont, SS. Kresege and then was a machine operator for 22 years at National Machinery, retiring in 1990.  He also was a bus driver for 30 years at Lakota, Tiffin City School and Calvert. John was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Tiffin Masonic Lodge #77, Blue Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star and the Allen Eiry Senior Center.  He was a Kansas Volunteer fireman, enjoyed playing pool, fishing, calling Bingo, traveling and taking his grandchildren for ice cream.

His funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424 with Pastor Michael Holcomb officiating.  Masonic Services will be conducted by the Tiffin Lodge #77.  Burial will be private in the Ohio Veterans Cemetery, Sandusky.

Friends may visit with the family from 5-7:00 P.M. on Monday, October 14, 2024 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas Fire Department or to the Alzheimer's Association.
