Joy Alice Posey Hintz, 83, of Tiffin, died early Monday morning, March 30, 2009 at Volunteers of America Autumnwood Care Center.
February 7, 1926, she was born in Zanesville, to the late J. Sherman and Lela (Zink) Posey. June 15, 1952, she married Dr. Howard W. Hintz.
Survivors include her husband, a son Loren (Margaret Vimmerstedt) Hintz of Chapel Hill, NC.; daughters Connie (Mark) Nusbaum of Tiffin; and Julia (Dan) Smith of Dublin, OH; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Joy was a North High School graduate of Columbus, where she was co-editor of the high school newspaper and she later earned her Bachelor of Art's and Bachelor of Science from The Ohio State University. She was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ and St. John UCC.
She taught third grade at Noble School in Tiffin, she also taught at Attica High School and second grade at Amsden School. She was a substitute teacher at numerous Seneca County schools. She enjoyed mineral collecting and was curator of the Jones Mineral Museum at Heidelberg College.
Joy was an advocate for many causes. She was honored for her service by the Ohio Woman's Hall of Fame, Farmworker Advocate Hall of Fame, Ohio Conservation Laboratory in Conservation Education and she received the NAACP Peacemaker Award for Martin Luther King Day. Joy was cofounder of Citizens Concerned for Peace and Justice in Central America.
Joy published several books. She enjoyed being a member of Tiffin Stamp Club, American Association of University Women, Church Women United and Book Club. She loved holding babies and laughing with them. She traveled throughout the country and world with her husband, Howard, eager to embrace other customs and their culture.
Everyone is welcome to attend graveside services 11:00 AM, Monday, April 6, 2009, in St. Jacob Cemetery in Republic with Pastor Doug DeVos officiating. Directions to the burial; take E. Market St./State Rte. 101, turn right on Co. Road 38, about 3 miles on left.
