Leon J. Steyer, 93, of New Riegel, passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at The Willows at Tiffin.
He was born on July 31, 1928, in Carey, Ohio, to Albert and Frances (Lenhart) Steyer. On September 2, 1961, in St. Boniface Catholic Church, he married Janice Scherger.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Steyer of New Riegel; five sons, Philip (Margaret) Steyer of Tiffin, Christopher (Patty) Steyer of Exton, PA, Gary (Heidi) Steyer of Port Clinton, Scott Steyer of Portland, OR and Patrick Steyer of New Riegel; two daughters, Yvonne (Mark) Dubielak and Kimberly Steyer, both of Toledo; daughter-in-law, Judy Steyer of Grand Blanc, MI; brother, Norman (Pat) Steyer of TN; sister, Pearl Nye of Alvada; 14 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Timothy Steyer; infant daughter, Jennifer Lynn Steyer; brothers, Francis, Howard, Wilfred, Richard, Edward, Donald, and infants Albert and Bernard; and sisters, Geraldine Clouse, Agnes Brickner, Marguerite Coleman, Mary Etchen and Bernadine Gosche.
Leon was a 1946 graduate of New Riegel High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from November 13, 1950 to August 13, 1952. On May 31, 2013, Leon was honored to participate in an Honor Flight. He was a long-time farmer, worked at Atlas Crankshaft for 18 years, and drove school bus for New Riegel Schools for over 20 years. He was a member of All Saints Parish where he was active in the folk group and choir, was a lector and Eucharistic Minister, and helped with the Church maintenance. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society, Cursillo of Toledo Diocese, 70-year member of the New Riegel American Legion Post 354, where he served as chaplain for over 30 years and New Riegel Knights of Columbus #10749, where he served as Treasurer. Leon loved spending time with his family and was his children and grandchildren's biggest sports fan.
His Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 31, 2022 at All Saints Parish with Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating. Mass will also be livestreamed at allsaints-parish.com. The family asks that you please wear a mask. Burial will follow in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the New Riegel American Legion.
Friends may visit with the family from 2-6:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 30, 2022 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424 and from 9-10:15 A.M. at Church on Monday. The family asks that you please wear a mask.
