Louis E. Steyer, Jr., 92, of Tiffin, passed away Saturday evening, May 12, 2012 at St. Francis Home in Tiffin.
On September 26, 1919 in Tiffin, he was born to Louis E. and Mildred (Blott) Steyer, Jr. On June 27, 1942 he married Catherine Kleinhenz in St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include six sons, Jim (Kathy) Steyer of Greenville, OH; George (Jody) Steyer of Medina, OH; Tom (Adelaida) Steyer of Africa; Mike Steyer of Tiffin, OH; Joe (Laurie) Steyer of Bowling Green, OH; Dan (Kelly) Steyer of Toledo, OH; six daughters, Mary Ann (Fred) Alaniz of Battle Creek, MI; Peg (Lowell) Hetzel of Tiffin, OH; Janet (Mark) Leahy of Tiffin, OH; Teres Zimmer of Lewis Center, OH; Barb (Mike) Houck of Maumee, OH; Chris (Bob) Baltes of Waterville, OH; 25 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Catherine of 66 years, a sister, Martha Phillips, two granddaughters, Emily and Maria Steyer and a great grandson, Greyson Steyer.
Louis was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a 1937 graduate of Tiffin Calvert and later from Tiffin University. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 21, 1942 and served as a radioman during WWII in the Philippines and Asiatic-Pacific Theatres. He was discharged after 3 years on December 16, 1945. After the war, he owned Pittock's Ice Cream Parlor in downtown Tiffin for over 10 years, worked as an insurance agent for Western and Southern Life and National Life Insurance for over 20 years and as an accountant for Adams Street Lumber Co. and John Marion Inc. in Saline, MI.
He was always very active, volunteering as an usher at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Credit Union and helping whenever he could with St. Joe's Festival. He was a member of Am Vets Post 48, raised Modena Pigeons for many years and after moving into Kiwanis Manor, he was a Board Member, Treasurer, and Past President. He crafted and painted Pecan Resin Santas, traveling around the state to craft shows.
Louis was a loving husband, caring father of twelve children and a wonderful grandpa and great grandpa. He loved his church and family and valued his friendships he made throughout the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Walters officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to mass. Burial will follow with Military Honors conducted by the United Veteran's Council at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from 3-7 PM at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory.
Memorial contributions may be made to Calvert Catholic Schools or St. Francis Home.
