Margaret was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; brothers, Marvin, Arvin, Donald and David Elchert; sister, Linda Haudenshield; sons, Larry Hoerig and Rick Hoerig; daughter, Diana Omlor; grandson, Andrew Omlor; and great-great granddaughters Mickayla Reinhart and Emerson Johnson.
Margaret was a 1949 graduate of Melmore Public School. She worked at General Electric, Bascom Elevator, and retired from Tiffin Developmental Center. Margaret was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a former member of the Eagles, Moose Lodge, and The Allen Eiry Senior Center, where she enjoyed day-tripping and casinos excursions.
Margaret grew up on her parents' farm on the south side of Tiffin. She didn't particularly care for farm life, but was required to attend to chores, drive tractors, milk cows, and bale. Many a long days and nights were spent working the farm. As with many women during the WW II ERA, Margaret's mother began working and she became primary caregiver to her younger siblings. Margaret loved to sing and said that often helped to pass time and cope with the reality of the times. Growing up she was a self-taught seamstress, designing and tailoring her own clothes. Margaret was known for her dark tresses and well -manicured polished nails. Even while residing at GSH, her appearance was meticulous and she looked forward to her weekly trip to the salon.
After starting her family, Margaret had little time left between working, family, and the mounds of laundry; all done using a wringer washer. All 11 children were taught to cook, clean, and take care of themselves. While chaotic and impecunious, the family survived and thrived.
Margaret enjoyed watching movies from the 30's featuring: Joan Crawford, Clark Gable and Don Ameche and listening to music by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan. Margaret taught herself to crochet and made dozens of afghans for family. She learned to cook at an early age, and was self-taught to can foods from the families' large gardens ensuring something was always on the table, if only a jar of green beans and a freshly made loaf of bread. Margaret enjoyed traveling, shopping and camping at Walnut Grove and Meadowbrook Park. Once the family was raised, Saturday mornings were always spent around the kitchen table with close friends: Angie Stover, Pat Hoerig, Ann Button, and Barb Elchert. The group professed to be solving the problems of the world, the church, and their children. Margaret watched as her close friends passed and so missed their visits and long conversations.
When asked what memories she most cherished, Margaret's answer was always, "Raising my 11 children." When asked what she was most proud of, "My three boys: Larry, Danny and Steve serving in the Army."
Ninety-two years of life on this earth, so much of history seen and while times were difficult, much joy and happiness was found. Mom will be forever missed and always remembered. The family wishes to thank Fostoria Hospice and the kind and caring staff at GSH for providing her with impeccable care.
