Obituary

Marjorie A (Hunt) Gillig of Tiffin lived an amazing life for 104 years.  She passed away on July 13, 2025, at StoryPoint Senior Living Village, in Waterville, OH where she resided since May, 2022.  Marjorie was born on March 31, 1921, in Fremont, OH to the late Andrew Litz Hunt and Regina Etheldreda (Favro) Hunt.

She married Paul Russell Gillig on January 15, 1945, in St. Ann Catholic Church in Fremont, OH while he was on leave from the Navy. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1976. Survivors include her children, Michael (Charlotte), Patrick (Roberta), Ann (Gary) Zimmerman, Timothy (Kelly), and Daniel (Sarah), 15 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.  Known by her grandchildren as Grandma Gillig, her name then affectionately evolved into Gigi when great grandchildren arrived.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son, Paul R Gillig III, "Skipper", brother, James Hunt, sisters Mary Jean (Hall) Porter, and Sara Lou Davis. Her siblings provided lifelong support for her.

Marjorie graduated from Fremont Ross High School and pursed an Associate degree from Tiffin University where she met her husband, Paul, and was Homecoming Queen.  She was a devout member of St. Mary Catholic Church, member of the Altar Rosary Society and an active Calvert High School supporter.  She volunteered many hours at St. Francis Home and Betty Jane Rehabilitation Center.  She was a member of many organizations and clubs, some being the Women Golf Association at Mohawk Golf Club, Allen Eiry Senior Center, Y -Wives, Penthouse, and Cotillion Club of Tiffin.  She was very active in Campfire Girls before moving to Tiffin winning several National Honor Awards.

She and Paul were part of The Nifty-Fifties, a couple's special social group that remained friends for life separated only by their eventual passings. The friends met monthly to bowl, have dinner at their respective homes and enjoy social time.  She had many hobbies including knitting, sewing, crafts, and playing bridge.  We will remember her elderberry pies that were made from berries her children picked at the lake.

An avid sports fan, she enjoyed watching Notre Dame football and basketball (she met Knute Rockne when she was young and enjoyed telling that story throughout her life); watching the Cleveland Indians (Guardians) and Ohio State games.  Duke basketball was one of her favorite teams.  A highlight was tuning into the NCAA tournaments.  She enjoyed reading and exploring her Irish family history, golfing at Mohawk Golf Club, attending dinners and events, gardening, and spending time at her home, the first year-round residence built in 1948 at her beloved Mohawk Lake where she resided for 74 years.

St. Patrick's Day was one of her favorite holidays as she enjoyed celebrating her heritage with family and friends. She has spent countless hours of her later years focused on her 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren whom she dearly loved and enjoyed.

The family would like to thank St Mary's church who supported her throughout her adult life and brought her so much joy.  The family would also like to thank the community at StoryPoint who took excellent care of her at the end of her life.  She enjoyed being an active resident and always carried her weekly activity sheet with her to participate in the many activities such as crafts, daily chronicles, Bingo, weekly music entertainment, bridge, and puzzles.

The many friends she made throughout her 104 years would be impossible to list but please know that we are grateful for the impact you made on her life and the kindnesses, you bestowed on her.  Thank you to all of her friends, nieces and nephews who have called, written, visited and made a special effort to keep in touch.  She always spoke fondly of the wonderful people she met and the blessings God had given her.
