Obituary

Philomena "Tommy" Mathias, 86, of Tiffin, passed away on Monday afternoon, September 22, 2014 at Elmwood at the Shawhan.

In 1914 her father came to the United States from San Bartolomeo, Italy and her mother and siblings followed in 1919. She was born on July 23, 1928, in Tiffin, Ohio, to Salvatore and Maria (Circelli) Paradiso. On June 28, 1947, in St. Mary Catholic Church, she married Sam Mathias and he preceded her in death on October 20, 1995.

Survivors include her son, Sam (Tracy) Mathias, Jr. of Binghamton, NY; 2 daughters, Mary Jo (Bob) SanGregory of Tiffin and Sue (Ron) Walters of Vail, AZ; brother, Salvatore "Sam" (Rachel) Paradiso of Tiffin; sister, Gilda "Gigi" (John) Sczesny of Fostoria; 2 sisters-in-law, Rose (Joe) Paradiso of Tiffin and Barb (Dan) Paradiso of Bowling Green; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers, Tony, Joe and Dan Paradiso and an infant brother; 5 sisters, Michaelina Paulus, Sara Ambrose, Carmie Cervantes, Mary Paradiso and an infant sister.

Tommy graduated in 1946 from Calvert High School and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where she volunteered and enjoyed helping with the festivals. She was a great baker and enjoyed volunteering at the voting polls, wintering in Florida, going on bus tours and traveling the world. Tommy was a loving and caring person and family and church were very important to her.

Her Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, September 26, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Walters officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will be at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may visit with the family from 5-8:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 4:30 P.M.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, Calvert Catholic Schools or Community Hospice Care.
