Rex Felton, Jr., 88, of Tiffin, passed away Saturday morning, January 7, 2012 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo.
On June 18, 1923 in Toledo, he was born to Rex and Erma (Lehman) Felton, Sr. He married Phyllis M. Hakes in Findlay on February 15, 1947 and celebrated 60 years together.
Survivors include 2 sons, James W. Felton and Rex H. "Rick" Felton both of Tiffin; a daughter, Susan (Greg) Nakanishi of Scarborough, ME; and grandchildren, Bradley Rex and Kurtis Greg Nakanishi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Phyllis in 2007, and a brother, William Felton in 2005.
Rex was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir and volunteered. He was Class President of the 1941 class of Tiffin Columbian High School received his B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1945 and his M.B.A. in 1947 from Tuck School of Finance. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1942-1946, received his officer training from Harvard University, served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, the Philippine Liberation and witnessed the Hydrogen Bomb Test at the Bikini Atoll. Rex was discharged as Lieutenant Junior Grade. He was a life member of Am Vets Post 48 and VFW Post 2842 in Upper Sandusky, Johnson Island Civil War Roundtable of Tiffin, member of Tiffin Rotary Club, Tiffin Elks Lodge 94, past-president of Tiffin Jaycees, where he was Man of the Year in 1959, board member of the Betty Jane Center and United Way of Seneca County, and past-president of the National Machinery Foundation.
Prior to his retirement in 2003 from United Insurance Service, he worked for several insurance companies in Iowa, Michigan and New York before returning to Tiffin. Rex enjoyed golfing and was a member at Mohawk Country Club and Clinton Heights Golf Course and traveled the world. Rex ran for mayor in 1960 and was on city council for 8 years. He enjoyed playing the trombone in area Jazz bands and his nickname was "Tune". He was a member of the Tiffin Columbian Athletic Hall of Fame, playing football for Columbian and Dartmouth. He scored the first touchdown in the north end-zone of the new stadium. He also lettered in basketball and track while in high school.
Rex was very active in everything he did. His smile and humbleness will be missed.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Katie Treadway officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery with military rites conducted by the United Veterans Council.
Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Civil War Museum of Ohio, Tiffin-Seneca Public Library or to a charity of the donor's choice.
