Richard John Elchert, 93, of Wendelstein, Germany, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2015 in Germany.
He was born on May 22, 1922, in New Riegel, Ohio, to Peter E. and Antoinetta (Huss) Elchert. On May 20, 1944, in St. Mary Catholic Church in Millersville, he married Evelyn M. Scherger and she preceded him in death on August 29, 1959. He then married Monica Gensmantel on July 27, 1963 in Nurnberg, Germany and she survives in Germany.
Also surviving are four sons, Richard (Linda) Elchert, Sr. of Kansas, Joseph Elchert of Tiffin, Peter Elchert and Michael (Steffi) Elchert, both of Germany; three daughters, Rebecca (Don) Judd of Tiffin, Barbara Agerter of Northwood and Mary Ann (Klaus) Hirsch of Germany; brother, Fred (Anna) Elchert of New Riegel; brother-in-law, Richard Walters of Tiffin; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer (Ty) Cooper, Lisa (Joe) Feld, Richard (Veronica) Elchert, Jr., Jill (Troy) Bailey, Heidi (Joe) Liburdi, Holly (Jack) Zaborowski, Elisa Elchert, Tom Elchert, Nick Elchert, David Elchert; and 12 great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edmund, Gerald and Loren; and three sisters, Valeria Bentz, Irene Walters and Bertha Rogier.
Richard graduated from New Riegel High School and served as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Rolette. He worked for National Machinery in Tiffin starting in 1946 and moved to Germany in 1962, continuing to work for National Machinery as shop manager and in customer service until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the National Machinery Quarter Century Club and the men's singing choir in Germany for many years. Richard enjoyed travelling, visiting annually in Tiffin and New Riegel and never forgetting his family and friends in Ohio. He was a Detroit Tiger's Fan, and loved to holiday in the Austrian Alps and Spain.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Walters officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Military honors by the United Veterans Council will follow the Mass on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church
A Mass and burial will take place in Germany on Tuesday, December 22, 2015.
Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Mass on Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Calvert Catholic Schools or the Bettsville American Legion Post #733.
