Obituary

Richard Cletus Gase, 90, of Tiffin, passed away Friday afternoon, February 12, 2021 at Mercy Health-Tiffin Hospital with his family at his side.

On October 12, 1930 in Tiffin, he was born to Cletus and Irene (Boes) Gase and married Martha Jean Zimmer on November 10, 1951 in St. Mary Catholic Church.

Richard and Martha shared 69 years together and raised nine children, Charles (Lynn) Gase of Sidney; Janet (Bryon) Eshelman of New Knoxville; Connie (Bill) Speros of Cleveland; Laura (Paul) Monachino of Perrysburg; Peter (Tiffany) Gase of Royal Oak, MI; John (Catherine) Gase, Andrew (Anne) Gase, Philip (Rosalind) Gase, and Julie (Vincent) Arnold all of Tiffin.  Also surviving are 25 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren with one expected soon, a brother Russell (Peg) Gase of Tiffin and two sisters, Joann Weaver of Carey and Barbara Mullennex of Tiffin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandchild Gweneth Ann Eshelman and two brothers, Lawrence and Francis.

Richard was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.  He attended the Josephinum in Columbus and graduated from Tiffin Calvert in 1948.  He served his country in the U.S. Army from June 27, 1951 through June 3, 1953.  He was a skilled carpenter and master surgeon with a pocketknife, working for Leo Schoen Construction, David Goetz and later retired from Heidelberg College in 1992 after 30 years in maintenance.   Richard was a member of K of C and volunteered at the Ecumenical Sharing kitchen and other area organizations for years.  He enjoyed a cold beer, playing Euchre and Sudoku, and singing.   Richard was a devoted Catholic and loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, February 19, 2021 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating and will be livestreamed at https://boxcast.tv/view/richard-gase-funeral-mass-h62iibvpkfxuimsofmvc.  Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the United Veterans Council of Seneca County.

A walk-through visitation will be Thursday, February 18, 2021 from 4-7 PM at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church Maintenance Fund, Ecumenical Sharing Kitchen at St. Paul's United Methodist Church or to the Gase Family Literacy Fund through the Tiffin Community Foundation.
