IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert "Bim"
Alex Theis
December 30, 1953 – January 28, 2022
Robert Alex "Bim" Theis, 68, of Tiffin and Lehigh Acres received his final flight itinerary on January 28, 2022 in Lehigh Acres, FL.
He was born on December 30, 1953 to Robert P. and Jane A. (Painter) Theis. He married Debra Hoffman and they later divorced.
Surviving are his mother, Jane A. Chaffee; his children, Alex (Maddy) Theis and Amy (Clay) Theis and a grandson, Grant Theis; sisters, Lynn (Jerry) Swensen, Jill (Dan) O'Connor, a brother, Chuck (Laura) Theis and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert P. Theis, son, Eric R. Theis, stepfather, Edwin Chaffee and his beloved dog, Molson.
He gained the nickname "Bim" at an early age and knew from the time he was four years old he wanted to be a pilot. Growing up, when he wasn't working on the family farm, he could be found at the grass air strip north of Tiffin. He was flying in his early teens and was licensed and owned his first plane by the age of 16. Bim went to Tiffin City Schools and graduated in 1972 from Tiffin Columbian High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and spent most of his service in Germany. He was honored with a Sharpshooter medal, M16 and Grenade honors and the National Defense Service Medal. After serving his country, Bim traveled Europe extensively and returned to Vero Beach for Flight Safety and Aviation School.
Bob worked for Island Airlines in Port Clinton, OH and then Midwest Airlines which then merged and became Airborne Express and flew YS-11 and DC-9's. On the home front he was always tinkering with a "toy" which would include, but not limited to a Spezio Sport and Gyro-Copter. He survived more than one plane crash and claimed, "Any landing you can walk away from, was a good landing." He lived with reckless abandonment awaiting the next adventure. Bob was a certified SCUBA Diver and a marksman shooter. After retiring, he enjoyed boating, fishing and most recently his new grandson who could outrun him.
His funeral service will be Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at 12:00 Noon at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. Burial will follow in Seneca Memory Gardens with military honors by the Seneca county United Veterans Council.
