Obituary

Robert J. Horn, 88, of Tiffin, passed away Friday morning, December 14, 2012 at Assisted Living at the Shawhan.

He was born August 3, 1924, in Tipton, IA., to the late Gustav and Norma (Jons) Horn. On August 9, 1948, he married Iva B. Boda and she preceded him in death on July 18, 1989. On March 10, 1990, he married Phyllis W. Miller.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, two daughters, Susan D. Horn of Pasadena, MD., and Sarah A. (Michael) Selmon of Alma, MI., a sister, Maxine (Bob) DeKock of Marion, IA., and three granddaughters, Hannah Selmon, Margaret Selmon and Emma Selmon, all of Alma, MI., step-children, Sharon D. Harvey of Hilton Head, SC., Thomas G. (Ellen) Miller of Columbia, SC., and Dorothy N. (Jerry) Baker of LaPorte, IN., three step-grandsons, Stephen F. Baker, Joel L. Baker and Thomas G. Harvey and four step-great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death along with his parents and wife, Iva, is a son, Robert J. Horn Jr., on March 2, 1986 and a sister, Margaret Richardson.

Robert was a veteran of WWII, and served as a member of the combat crew on a B-17 Bomber in the US Army, 8th Air Force, Sudbury, England. Following the war, he attended the State University of Iowa, graduating Cum Laude in 1949. He then joined the General Electric Co., in Syracuse, NY., and entered their 3 year Business Training Course. Following completion of the courses, he was assigned as the Plant Accountant for their television cabinet manufacturing plant in Wabash, IN., and for their hermetic motor plant in Tiffin, Ohio. During their 100th year, in 1978, General Electric Co. gave a centennial award to one person in each of their 134 locations. Robert was given this award for their Tiffin location. He retired in January, 1986.

His community activities included Scout Master of his church's Boy Scout Troop, Chairman of Church Board, Church Treasurer, Chairman of the Budget Committee, member of Tiffin Community Fund, member of Finance Committee at the Tiffin YMCA, president of the Tiffin Chapter of American Field Service as well as other activities.

A Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424 with Pastor Hannah Tucker officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Tiffin Glass Museum, Stein Hospice or to a local Veteran's organization of choice.
