Virgil J. 'Virg' Mathias, 85, of Tiffin, died Monday evening, June 1, 2009, at Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.
February 15, 1924, he was born in Tiffin, to Virgil J. Sr. and Louise F. (Briedenbach) Mathias. November 26, 1942, he married Rita Zoll in St. Mary Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Rita, a son, Virgil (Marlen) Mathias III, of Columbus, three daughters, Bonnie Wink of Evansville, IN, Mary Ann Sheldon (Bill Yelverton) of Sacramento, CA, Jane (Joe) Hartzell of Tiffin, two sisters, Sr. Nancy Mathias OSU, of Toledo, Judy (Jim) Kiefus of Royal Oak, MI, grandchildren, Ann (Paul) Demery, Phillip (Lindsay) Wink, Brian Wink, Nicki Mathias, Neil (Kristen) Mathias, Mike (Lori) Sheldon, Paul (Nadine) Hartzell, Jason Hartzell and Eric Hartzell, great-grandchildren, Morgan and Addison Demery, Matthew and Aidan Hartzell, many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death along with his parents, is a sister, Evelyn Travis.
Virg was a 1942 graduate of Calvert High School where he played football and baseball. He worked at Hanson Machinery and later retired from National Machinery, where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. As one of the original members of the Tiffin Stamp Club, he served as treasured at one time. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and president of the Board of Directors for St. Joseph Credit Union for 17 years. He became the 'Bingo Man' of St. Joseph Parish after the death of Dick Staib. This lasted 54 years. He enjoyed years of golfing and loved to fish.
He was a long time supporter of the Calvert Boosters Club and Athletic Club.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Friday, June 5, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to the Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family 4-7 PM, Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, OH, 44883, 419-447-2424,. A Christian wake service will be 3:45 PM. National Machinery Quarter Century Club will meet in body at 7:00 PM.
