William Henry Gibson, 101, of Tiffin passed away Sunday morning, February 7, 2010 at St. Francis Home in Tiffin.
Henry was born to David William and Helena (Sinning) Gibson on February 10, 1908 in Holton Kansas. He married Harriet Keller on June 11, 1941.
Survivors include two daughters, Julie (Richard) Cox of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Emily (Wellington) Ow of East Lansing, Michigan; two granddaughters, Yolanda (Chris) Higgins of Audubon, Pennsylvania; Millicent (Kevin) Sullivan of Wilmington, Delaware; two great grandsons, Liam and Kyle Sullivan; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Helen Throop and his wife Harriet (March 30, 2002).
He graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas in1929 and later received his Master of Music Degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Henry also studied music with renowned pianist Egon Petri. In his first year after graduation, he taught private students in Longmont, Colorado, and in his second year, he taught at Huron College in Huron, South Dakota. In 1931 he began is career at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, where he was Professor of Piano and Organ forty-two years.
Henry was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, where he served as organist for twenty-five years. Other memberships included the Music Teachers National Association, the National Certification Board (Chairman from1976-1979), and the Ohio Music Teacher's Association (OMTA). He received a sixty-year membership award from OMTA in 1995.
In 1943 he volunteered for the U.S. Army where he trained for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Subsequently, he was stationed in England serving his country as an Entertainment Specialist for the troops until 1945.
Henry had a concern for others and volunteered his time with area soup kitchens and served on the advisory board for the Seneca County Welfare Department. Henry's and Harriet's compassion for life allowed them to open their home to many families going through critical times in their lives.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Trinity United Church of Christ with Rev. Dr. Louis Dorsch officiating. Following the memorial service, friends may visit with the family at the church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the William Henry Gibson Prize Fund at Heidelberg University, Trinity United Church of Christ or to a charity of the donor's choice.
