William T. "Bill" Smith, 77, of Tiffin, passed away Tuesday evening, February 4, 2014 at his home.
He was born on October 2, 1936, in Tiffin, Ohio, to Milton and Rosemary (Bender) Smith. On December 28, 1963, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, he married Mary Bernadette Fleck.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Bernadette; son, Dan Smith of Worthington, Ohio; two daughters, Julie (Larry) Teague of Columbia, SC and Janet (Matt) Guehl of New Albany, Ohio; one granddaughter, Ella Nicole Guehl; and one brother, Ed (Gerry Opp) Smith, of Tiffin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Bill graduated in 1955 from Tiffin Columbian High School, attended Tiffin University and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enlisted in the United States Navy in October 1953 while still attending high school, and was discharged in February 1957 to transfer to the United States Army. While in the Army, he worked with building anti-aircraft missiles and was honorably discharged in April 1963. After his military service, Bill held several positions, which included working at the Advertiser Tribune, and was also owner of the north end Marathon service station and Smitty's M&R, both in Tiffin. He retired in 1998 from Smiley Tire in Fremont, was past president of the Tiffin Kiwanis Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus #608 and volunteered at many organizations. Bill enjoyed camping, playing euchre, woodworking and having coffee with friends.
His Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at a later date.
Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 A.M.at St. Joseph Catholic Church, until the time of service on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tiffin Kiwanis Club or a charity of the donor's choice.
