David Powell Obituary

David W. “Dave” Powell, 59, of Columbus, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, as a result of an auto accident in Wood County, Ohio.

He was born on February 17, 1960, in Toledo Ohio, and is survived by his son, Zackary Powell of Columbus; daughter, Britnee Powell of Boulder, CO; and siblings, Mark, Robert Lyle, Kathy and Claudia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David L. Powell; and brother, Rick.

Dave was a son, a brother, a father, and a friend. He approached life with a childlike playfulness, always joking and teasing with people - it was his way of showing he cared. He grew up with a big family with a loving mother - Barbara.

He had a true appreciation for nature. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and canoeing when he was younger. In recent years, he would always stop to watch deer or keep an eye out for eagles when he was driving truck. A fond memory for his children, Britnee and Zack, was a day canoeing on the Au Sable river a few years ago.

Dave was a handyman. He basically thought he was Tim the Toolman Taylor. He was hard working when he put his mind to it. He had a lot of knowledge and can-do attitude when it came to household projects.

He worked at FoodTown, Nickles, AmeriStop, Coca Cola, and Pepsi for many years. He drove for various truck companies over the last five years. When he was working, he was dedicated.

Dave loved his family. He wasn’t always the best at showing it, but he loved the best way he knew how. He always loved family get togethers - for the food and a chance for people who loved him to laugh at his jokes, which he thought were gold. Dave especially loved his kids - Britnee, David, and Zack. When they were growing up, he helped his kids build forts out of corrugated plastic and tape. These were epic childhood forts that would wind through from room to room - a kid’s paradise. He also coached Zack’s t-ball team when he was growing up.

Dave loved to cook on occasion - he made tuna fish casserole and bbq chicken on the grill. He would slather half a bottle of bbq sauce on every single piece of chicken.

It’s important not to breeze over the realities of a human life - it’s a summation of everything wonderful and awful. We can all remember Dave going through cycles of pulling himself out of the deepest holes and grips of alcohol and doing better for periods of time ranging between a few months and even up to a year at times. It’s no easy feat and it’s important to pay honor to his strength at those times. The more we openly talk about the realities of life, the more we can relate to one another and grow from being honest.

Let’s move forward with forgiveness and hold Dave and each other up in love and light.
