Eileen Metzger Obituary

Eileen E. Metzger, 92, of Carey, passed on to her eternal home, Saturday evening, November 5, 2022, at Independence House in Fostoria.

She was born July 22, 1930, in Tiffin; the daughter of Frank and Leonna (Rumschlag) Wagner.  She became the beloved wife of Mark P. Metzger on March 31, 1951, in St. Joseph Catholic Church and they shared 67 wonderful years together before he passed on February 1, 2019.

Eileen is survived by a family she loved and cherished  that includes her children; Elizabeth “Betty” (Gary) Fredritz of Carey, Jane (Kenny Wall) Atkins of Forest, Michael (Carmen) Metzger of New Riegel and Carol (Dennis) Brickner of Tiffin; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; sister, Rose Riester of Tiffin; brother-in-law, Raymond Schindler of Oxford; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Wagner of Tiffin, Nan Hohman of Vermilion, Donna Durbin of Sandusk and Carolyn Metzger of Toledo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mark; two great grandchildren; brothers, Paul, Walter, Louis, Charles and James Wagner; and sister, Virginia Kubasek.

A graduate of Tiffin Calvert High School in 1948, Eileen worked for Ohio Bell as an operator until she stayed home to raise her family and returned to work once they were in school.  She enjoyed many years in the cafeteria of New Riegel Schools, retiring in 1994.

Eileen was a very talented artist who enjoyed sewing, painting, crocheting, doing crafts of all sorts and sharing her talents with others brought her happiness, especially teaching the aides at Independence House.  She was a 4-H advisor for over 15 years, followed her family’s craft of growing large gardens and beautiful flowers. Many delicious meals were enjoyed by the visiting nieces and nephews.

Strong in her faith, she was a member of All Saints Parish, New Riegel, former member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Frenchtown where she sang in the choir, was a Eucharistic Minister, member of the Rosary Altar Society and volunteered with parish festivals and church maintenance. Eileen was also a member of the New Riegel American Legion Auxiliary.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at All Saints Parish, New Riegel with Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating.  Burial will follow in Frenchtown.
