Elizabeth "Betty" Smith Obituary

On her 88th birthday, Dec. 16, Betty Smith died in her home after a short illness surrounded by her loving family.

Most recently a resident of St. Francis’s Friedman Assisted Living Village, she previously resided at 24 Scheiber St. and even earlier at 160 Ann St.

She was born in Tiffin on Dec. 16, 1933, and was a life-long resident of the city.  Her parents, Sylvester J. Zoll, Jr. and Mary Virginia (Kuhn) preceded her in death.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Leo F. Smith, in 2017.  They were married on April 21, 1956, at St. Joseph Catholic Church by the Rev. James Steinle.

Her survivors include her children, Thomas J. (Esme) Smith of Arnold, MD.; Deb (Lynn) Smith of Temperance, Mi.; Edward L. (Patty) Smith, Jude A. (Alan) Overmyer, Gin Turner; Christopher L. (Janie) Smith and Donna J. (Cary) Theis, all of Tiffin;  13 grandchildren, Jordan Smith of Takoma, Md., Taylor Smith of Denver, Logan Smith of Lakewood, Josh (Amy Brooks) Smith of Lewis Center, Sarah (Rob Mahone) Smith of Euclid, Austin Overmyer of Fremont, Lindsay Overmyer of Devils Lake, North Dakota; Jake (Kathryn) Turner of Rocky River, Captain Chase (Samantha) Turner of Hubert, North Carolina, Trooper Kyle (Kendra) Shearer of McCutchenville, Keith (Val) Shearer of Parma Heights, Kara Theis of Sandusky and Nick Theis of Tiffin; great grandchildren, Kannon, Kace and Karley Shearer, Leo and Noah Turner, Madelyn and Anna Turner, Evelina and Isabella Shearer and Recce and Cohen Brooks; two sisters, Mary Lou Hohman, of Tiffin and Susie Luckhardt of San Antonio, Texas.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, John Zoll; and son-in-law, Joe Turner.

A 1951 graduate of Calvert High School, she continued to socialize monthly with her high school “card club” girls. Betty returned decades later as the school’s cafeteria manager, a position she held for over 25 years.  Always a Seneca fan, the booster club awarded her the Tom E. Omlor Award in recognition for all her volunteer work supporting Calvert sports.  She and Leo were always in the stands cheering on their children and grandchildren in their sporting and academic activities.

A member of the Rosary and Altar Society, Betty in her retirement years was a member of the St. Joseph Josephines and until earlier this year served on the Intercom distribution team.  Betty and Leo enjoyed several bus trips a year exploring Ohio and neighboring states, which always included at least one trip to Ohio’s Amish counties.  After Leo’s passing, her children continued the tradition with an annual birthday trip to see an Amish Christmas show.

The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, December 20, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating.  A Rosary will be prayed 30 minutes prior to Mass.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
