Janet Ruth (Harkins) Ferner

January 22, 1934 ~ October 30, 2021 (age 87)

Obituary

Janet Ruth Ferner, 87, of Tiffin, OH passed peacefully at her home on Saturday morning, October 30th.

She was born in Bellevue, PA on January 22, 1934 to Rev. Ira and Mildred Harkins. She was the only remaining Harkins sibling, as she was preceded in death by sisters, Dolores Jean, Lois and brother, David.

On August 21, 1952, she married James Ferner and they had two children:  Ruth Ann (Ferner) Scott of Tiffin and Dr. David Ferner of Santa Rosa Beach, FL.  She is survived by her children, daughter-in-law, Kelli Ferner; grandson, Aaron Scott; granddaughters, Laura (Scott) Fredericks and Kendalyn Ferner; great granddaughters, Kora Scott and Ruby Fredericks; numerous nieces, nephews, and family friends.

Within the family, Grammie Janet is known as the one who always had time for the ‘Grands’ to lead her by the finger and coax her into doing whatever they desired. Visits to her house always included homemade Mac & Cheese, her infamous Bride’s Salad and brown sugar cookies.  She never told anyone, “No” and the ‘Grands’ knew it!

Janet and Jim enjoyed a long happy marriage until Jim’s death in 2016.  Janet was a quiet, caring, talented woman who never liked to be in the spotlight.  She walked the walk and talked the talk of a person devoted to the Golden Rule and followed the Ten Commandments, demonstrating those attributes to not only family, but everyone in her life.  Family and faith were the cornerstones of her life.

Janet spent more than 30 years working at Heidelberg College, beginning in the Alumni Office, then taking over as the Manager of Office Services.  She was responsible for operating and maintaining the offset printing presses and all the other equipment necessary to produce reports, booklets, and printed materials for the college.  Although Janet was a master manipulator of the presses, she could not manage to navigate the intricacies of her cell phone.  The family would like to apologize for all the time you had to wait for her to find something on her cell phone that ‘disappeared’ when she wanted to share!  Janet was an excellent seamstress and an avid quilter.  Over the years many family members and close friends received quilts as gifts. Those quilts will be a lasting legacy, showcasing her incredible talent.

Janet was an active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Tiffin, giving of her time tirelessly as part of the Ruth Circle, making quilts, bookbags and pillowcase dresses to be sent overseas and as part of the Funeral Dinner Gang.  Giving up traveling with her Seniors on the Go trips was one of the hardest things she had to do as her health deteriorated.  She LOVED those trips with her friends!

In keeping with her lifelong desire not to be in the spotlight, she has requested no calling hours or funeral.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude for the outstanding support and care provided by Comfort Keepers and Bridge Hospice in the last months and weeks of Janet’s life.

We would further humbly request that any memorials in her name be directed to either Bridge Hospice (bridgehospice.org) or St. John’s UCC, 10 Main Street, Tiffin, OH  44883.
