Paul Vaughn Obituary

Paul Leonard Vaughn, passed into the loving arms of his Lord on February 21, 2021 surrounded by the love of his family.

Paul was born on the family farm in Carey, Ohio on August 21, 1938 to Joseph and Ellen (Haffey) Vaughn.  He was the youngest of 5 children, often to his advantage.  A 1956 graduate of Carey High School, he pursued his education at The Ohio State University, worked briefly in the oil industry in Oklahoma and served his country, joining the Army in 1957.

While stationed in Frankfurt, Germany he met and married the love of his life, Marie-Luise (Mary Lou) Mayer on June 25, 1960.  Planning to remain in Germany, they returned to the US when his father became critically ill.  They settled in Tiffin and he began a life-time career at National Machinery, retiring in 2001.  He was a natural teacher and was most proud of his time helping to establish and teach in their training school.  He was a member of the National Quarter Century Club.

Paul is survived by a daughter, Anne, 3 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren:  Matthew (Jill) Zimmerman and son, Anderson of Menomonee Falls, Wi., Mark (Noel) Zimmerman and children, Vaughn, Bryce and Corinne of Tiffin, Marliese (Chad) Gibson and children, Stella, Barrett and Zofia of Hilliard; and son-in-law Terence Zimmerman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie-Luise in 2018; his parents; and siblings, James, Joseph, Robert and Marjorie.

Paul was an avid reader and OSU fan and he had numerous and varied interests.  His love of aviation led him to pursue his private pilot license and flight instructor certificate.  He truly enjoyed teaching others the freedom of flight.  He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, which led him and Mary Lou to a great group of friends in Chapter 50 and they were instrumental in planning the Mid-Eastern Regional Fly-in (MERFI) for many years. Many of these friends joined them in Wagon-master camping tours which he enjoyed along with family camping adventures.  Paul was also a history buff, having great interest in the Civil War.  He and Mary Lou were members of the Johnson’s Island Civil War Roundtable, serving as the editor of the monthly newsletter for many years.

Family was vitally important and he spent many hours attending their activities.  He especially enjoyed band concerts, football and wrestling matches along with volleyball and softball games, his attendance being limited by Parkinson’s Disease most recently.

Paul was greatly loved and shared his love with many.  Special thanks to his wonderful team of caregivers at St. Francis Home and fellow residents who kept his spirits up during the pandemic which severely limited his physical contact with family.
