Richard Wall, 81, of New Riegel, died peacefully at home, on Saturday evening, September 29, 2018 after a long battle with cancer.
He was born on June 26, 1937 in Detroit, MI to Oswald F. and Elenor A. (Reinhart) Wall. He married Judy Kay Lupton on June 25, 1960.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Patricia Ann (Brian) Maloney of Gahanna and Barbara Susan (Rob) Genuario of Mt. Airy, MD; sons, Alan Richard (Martha) Wall of Mt. Gilead, Ohio and Jeffery Frank (Elizabeth) Wall of Alexandria, Ohio; eleven beloved grandchildren; one great grandson; and his cat, Gato.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Mary Louise Dreyer.
Richard served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers for two years in Germany and Colorado. After being discharged from the Army, he moved to Ohio in 1957 to help on his parent’s farm and begin work as a machinist at ExCello/Airfoil Textron in Fostoria.
He started playing volleyball with New Riegel St. Boniface Church members in the1970s and continued playing with various teams until he was 80. After retiring from Airfoil Textron and from farming, he and Judy traveled the country camping and playing in volleyball tournaments. He played in the Senior Olympics and earned a ring after playing 15 years in Huntsman Games in Utah. They visited all 50 states. He enjoyed camping in the Rockies, visiting Alaska on various cruises, and fishing in Canada. He loved to play card games with family, read a good history or adventure book, watch woodworking shows, do crossword puzzles, and putter in his vegetable garden.
A man who could fix or build nearly anything, he loved to spend time in the workshop/garage he built, doing woodworking and tinkering. He built many fine items of furniture and other things using scrap wood from pallets that he would make into lumber. He would find wood everywhere to store until he found a use for it. He made a beautiful rocking horse for each family for the grandchildren. In 1967, he used plans from Sears to build a pickup camper for the farm truck, which they used for many years to travel with the four children and a German shepherd. In 1994, he restored a vintage 1969 Open Road motor home and even in his late-70’s he started restoring a larger one. They spent part of each winter camping in Texas.
