Virginia Gillen Obituary

Virginia L. Gillen, 88, of Tiffin, passed away Friday morning, December 10, 2021 at St. Francis Home. 

She was born on May 8, 1933, in Bucyrus, Ohio, to Foster and Eleanor (Crawford) Corfman.  On July 19, 1952, in St. Peter’s Rectory in Upper Sandusky, she married James P. Gillen and he preceded her in death in 1981. 

Survivors include her three sons, Patrick M. Gillen of Lancaster, TX; Thomas A. (Kathleen) Gillen of Hartselle, AL; Christopher G. Gillen of Willis Point, TX; daughter, Joan Marie (Joseph) Williams of Tiffin; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. 

She was also preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Robert E. Corfman. 

Virginia was a 1951 graduate of Bucyrus High School, attended Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland for a year and in 1963 she became an LPN.  She retired from Tiffin Mercy Hospital and worked with Seneca County Human Services as a foster mother to over 300 children from 1970 to 1982.  She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Eucharistic Minister, former member of Catholic Ladies of Columbia volunteered for the American Red Cross, a caregiver to many, and past member of the Red Hat Society.  Virginia was a Calvert and Columbian fan and enjoyed Ohio State and Cleveland sports. She enjoyed playing cards and BINGO, going to Flea Markets, planting flowers and a collector of many things over the years.  

Her Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Matthew Rader officiating.   A Rosary will be prayed 30 minutes prior to Mass.  Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. 

Friends may visit with the family from 5:00-8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424.  Please dress casual.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Calvert Catholic Schools or to St Francis Home for Activities, Planting with Dawn or the Physical Therapy Department. 

The family would like to thank the St. Francis Home staff for their compassion and care the past six years, especially nursed Dan, Nicki and Harvey in the PT Department,  Dawn the Religious Director & mom’s planting partner & green thumb assistant, Sister Gemma, who’s paintings brightened her room and special friend, Julie who visited often. The staff extended both Virginia and the family members sensitivity that was greatly needed and appreciated.
